Mediahuis Ireland takes home 13 wins at European Newspaper Awards

Mediahuis Ireland has picked up an impressive 13 wins at the European Newspaper Awards across the Irish Independent and the Sunday Independent.A total 136 papers from 22 countries entered the awards – with more than 3,500 entries across 20 categories.

A number of entries in each category were selected for Awards of Excellence by the jury, with Mediahuis Ireland winning 13. Coverage of the death of Sinéad O’Connor won awards in the news frontpages/coverage of prominently deceased person category.

The Irish Independent front page on the day after O’Connor’s death received an award, as did the Sunday Independent’s coverage under the headline “Rest in Protest”.

Two front pages of the Irish Independent’s Weekend magazine (52 Great Escapes and OMG! It’s the end) and two front pages of Review (A Bigger Splash and Cocaine’s Coming Home) were recognised in the sectional front pages of national newspapers category.

A further two issues of Weekend won awards in the weekend supplements (full edition) category, Dublin 2.0 and The Summer Issue.

The Sunday Independent picked up a win for Life magazine’s ‘Ice Baby: Can freezing your eggs really insure against disappointment?’ in the magazine supplements (full edition) category.

Acclaimed podcast I’m Not Here to Hurt You, hosted by Kevin Doyle, tells the story of Dublin bank robber John O’ Hegarty. It received an Award of Excellence in the podcast category.

Three episodes of The Indo Daily podcast were also recognised in the podcast category.

Editor-in-chief of Mediahuis Ireland Cormac Bourke said: “To get 13 Awards of Excellence in the European Newspaper Awards is a fantastic achievement for the Irish Independent and Sunday Independent.

“Our journalists are working to produce quality news, features and sport in both print and digital. Every day the team puts together a package they hope will both serve and engage readers. To see that recognised by a panel of international judges is very encouraging.”

“It has been an outstanding year for our podcasts with I’m Not Here To Hurt You reaching number one in the charts for several weeks and The Indo Daily also picking up a number of awards at home and abroad.

“Audio is an area we hope to continuing growing in 2024 because we know our audience want it in ever-increasing numbers,” he added.

There was also success for other Mediahuis titles, with the Dutch paper NRC taking home the overall European (Daily) Newspaper of the Year award.
